A multivariate approach to explore the genetic variability in the F2 segregating population of a tomato second cycle hybrid JBAG
Cabodevila,V.G; Picardi,L.A; Pratta,G.R.
Segregating progeny from the tomato Second Cycle Hybrids (SCH) that were obtained from crossing RIL (Recombinant Inbred Lines) allows the detection of new genetic combinations that could increase genetic variability in F2 populations. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate eleven tomato quality traits in a segregating F2 population obtained from a SCH and, then, to characterize the molecular diversity by six AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) primer combinations. Different multivariate analyses were used to assess the degree of concordance among these two approaches to detect genetic variability. Sixty-nine F2 plants were obtained by selfing the SCH (ToUNR18xToUNR1). The parental RIL were derived from an interspecific cross between...

Barley Types and Varieties in Spain: Un panorama histórico Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Martínez-Moreno,Fernando; Igartua,Ernesto; Solís,Ignacio.
Barley is currently the most cultivated crop in Spain, with an acreage of about three million ha. Its importance stems from its adaptation to areas with poor soil conditions and water stress. The aim of this work is to describe the historical evolution of barley types and varieties of barley grown by farmers in Spain. A historical review was performed by consulting articles and books on the history, archaeology, and agronomy related to the issue. Different web sites and articles about the current varietal state of barley in Spain were also consulted. Another important information source was the CRF (Centro de Recursos Fitogenéticos, Spanish Center of Plant Genetic Resources) of Spain, where a large collection of landraces is preserved. The first barleys...

Characterization of tomato generations according to a three-way data analysis Bragantia
Medico,Ana Paula Del; Cabodevila,Victoria Guadalupe; Vitelleschi,Maria Susana; Pratta,Guillermo Raúl.
ABSTRACT Availability of a three-way data analysis to characterize two consecutive tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) generations is necessary to continue a plant breeding program with less uncertainty. The aim of this work was to analyze tomato fruit quality from F2 and F3 populations by two three-way data analysis: multiple factorial analysis (MFA) and generalized procrustes analysis (GPA). These techniques have the same main objective, searching for a common structure, but they achieve it in different ways. This work evaluated 18 tomato genotypes, represented by individual plants in F2 and selfed families in F3. The same quantitative traits related to fruit quality were measured in both generations. The first two axes of the MFA represented 51.0% of the...

Evolutionary dynamics of Cucurbita argyrosperma from the Mesoamerican domestication center using SSR molecular markers PAB
Priori,Daniela; Villarreal,Daniel Zizumbo; Ek,Víctor Manuel de Jesús Canché; Limones-Briones,Verónica; Barbieri,Rosa Lía.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the evolutionary dynamics of the wild-weedy-domestic gene pool of Cucurbita argyrosperma squash by estimating the levels of genetic diversity and gene flow in the putative area of its domestication. Nine populations were collected, and DNA was extracted from young leaves harvested separately from approximately 20 individuals in each population. The DNA fragments were amplified with eight pairs of SSR primers and separated by electrophoresis in 5% denaturing polyacrylamide gels. Genetic diversity and the amount of gene flow were estimated in the populations, and Bayesian grouping was used to determine the levels of gene infiltration and probability of ancestry. The ethnobotanical exploration indicated...

In vitro conservation of blackberry genotypes under minimal growth conditions and subsequent large-scale micropropagation PAB
Gomes,Hugo Teixeira; Bartos,Patrícia Monah Cunha; Andrade,Maíra Teixeira de; Almeida,Raphael Ferreira; Lacerda,Luciana Florencio de; Scherwinski-Pereira,Jonny Everson.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the micropropagation of blackberry (Rubus spp.) cultivars, after in vitro conservation under minimal growth conditions. Nodal segments of the 'Guarani', 'Caingangue', 'Ébano', and 'Xavante' genotypes were conserved under minimal growth conditions at 20ºC, for 15 months. Microshoots were regenerated and multiplied by up to five successive subcultures, when they were rooted and acclimatized. After 30 days of acclimatization in a greenhouse, rooted plantlets showed no significant losses. Blackberry cultivars can be conserved in vitro for 15 months, without subcultures and, after this time, they can be micropropagated on a large-scale, maintaining the regenerative potential and multiplication.

Is the genetic integrity of natural plant populations ex situ preserved with the current sampling, conservation and regeneration approaches? JBAG
Camadro,E.L.
Acceleration of environment degradation and climate change poses serious threats to both natural and agricultural ecosystems. In fact, the number of endangered plant species at the global level has increased yearly in the last decades, due to anthropic interventions that sum up to the climate change. Samples of natural plant populations, particularly of wild crop relatives, are ex situ conserved in germplasm banks, which have become active in the provision of genetic resources to breeders. The aim of this article is to generate discussion on the adequacy of (a) current protocols for sampling and ex situ conservation of the natural genetic diversity and (b) the actual species paradigm in plants, due to their consequences for this and future generations.

Physiological maturity of Luffa cylindrica (L.) Roem. Seeds Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Medeiros,Marcelo Gurgel; Silva Neto,José Sisenando de Sênna; Oliveira,Giordanio Bruno Silva; Torres,Salvador Barros; Silveira,Lindomar Maria da.
ABSTRACT Maturation of seeds involves a systematic sequence of physical and physiological alterations observed from fecundation until they become independent of the mother plant. These alterations comprehend a set of steps which prepare them for a successful germination in the future, characterized by the synthesis and accumulation of reserves. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the development and physiological quality of seeds of L. cylindrica accessions during maturation. Fruits of L. cylindrica accessions were harvested from the 10th day after anthesis (DAA) until the 50th DAA, at 10-day intervals. In each harvest, fruit fresh weight was determined, and then the seeds were manually extracted and subjected to the following evaluations: 100-seed weight,...

Structure of the phenotypic variability of fruit and seed traits in natural populations of Eugenia dysenterica dc. (Myrtaceae) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Novaes,Carolina Ribeiro Diniz Boaventura; Mota,Elias Emanuel Silva; Novaes,Evandro; Telles,Mariana Pires de Campos; Chaves,Lázaro José.
Abstract Eugenia dysenterica DC. (cagaita tree) is a fruit tree native to the Brazilian Cerrado. It is a promising species for cultivation, but little basic information exists on the phenotypic diversity and quantitative variation of its fruits and seeds at a population scale. Thus, the present study proposes to estimate the phenotypic parameters of the species’ fruits and seeds based on the variability among mother plants and among subpopulations, thereby aiming to increase knowledge for breeding and conservation of the species. For this, 25 natural subpopulations (local populations) were sampled in five Brazilian states. Within each subpopulation, 20 fruits were collected from each of six sampled mother plants. Data for biomass, transverse and...

Use of microsatellites for evaluation of genetic diversity in cherry tomato Bragantia
Aguirre,Nelson Ceballos; López,Walter; Orozco-Cárdenas,Martha; Coronado,Yacenia Morillo; Vallejo-Cabrera,Franco.
ABSTRACT Much of the diversity of tomato is found in wild forms, the most important being the Solanum lycopersicum L. var. cerasiforme and S. pimpinellifolium. The objective of this research was to assess the genetic diversity of 30 introductions of cherry tomato with 36 microsatellite molecular markers. The study was conducted at the Plant Transformation Research Center (PTRC) of the University of California. A dendrogram was built using the Dice-Nei and Li similarity index and the UPGMA clustering method, where introductions were differentiated without preserving a distribution pattern obeying the geographical area of origin. A coefficient of genetic differentiation was found (Fst = 0.3474), showing a high genetic differentiation of the introductions;...
